Last updated: May 2026. Hold and Win mechanics documented from 9 bonus rounds triggered across our 280-spin test set, plus replays from public big-win compilations.
The Hold and Win Respins round is the part of Tiger Gems that drives the entire session. It's not the base-game paylines. It's not the four jackpot tiers in isolation. It's the lock-and-reset respin loop β every new Money Symbol landing puts another lock on the grid and resets the respin counter back to 3, building toward the chance at a full-grid Grand jackpot of 1,000Γ bet. This is the chase mechanic that 3 Oaks Gaming has refined across dozens of titles since the original Booongo-era Hold & Win prototypes, and Tiger Gems is one of the cleaner iterations. This article unpacks exactly how the round triggers, what happens inside it, when the respins exhaust, and what realistic-vs-dream outcomes look like.

What "Hold and Win" actually means
Three terms get used interchangeably in slot communities:
- Hold and Win β 3 Oaks Gaming's brand name for the respin mechanic.
- Lock and Spin β generic industry term for the same concept.
- Money Respins β Pragmatic Play's variant brand name.
All three describe the same underlying mechanic: special symbols that lock in place on a multi-respin bonus, with the goal of accumulating enough of them to maximise payout. 3 Oaks Gaming popularised the design with Booongo-era titles like 3 Coins and Hot to Burn Hold and Spin; Pragmatic later released competing variants. Tiger Gems is the studio's 2023 refinement of the formula.
How Hold and Win triggers
6 or more Money Symbols anywhere on the 5Γ4 grid on the same base-game spin = Hold and Win Respins activates.
That's the trigger. 3 Oaks doesn't load this game with multiple trigger combinations or symbol-tier scaling β it's a clean threshold:
| Money Symbols on trigger spin | Locked positions at start | Open positions for respins |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 14 |
| 7 | 7 | 13 |
| 8 | 8 | 12 |
| 9 | 9 | 11 |
| 10+ | 10+ | 10 or fewer |
More Money Symbols on the trigger spin = better starting position. The minimum is 6; the maximum theoretical is 20 (full grid on the trigger spin alone, which would immediately award the Grand jackpot without any respins β extraordinarily rare).
Trigger frequency: ~1 in 110-130 spins based on our test set.
What happens inside the respin round
Once you've entered the bonus, three things distinguish it from base-game play:
1. Only Money Symbols can land on empty positions. All other symbols (paying symbols, low-pay cards, scatters, wilds) are removed from the reel set for the duration of the respins. The grid either gets new Money Symbols or stays as it was.
2. Every new Money Symbol that lands resets the respin counter back to 3. This is the chase mechanic. If you have 1 respin left and a single Money Symbol lands, the counter resets to 3 and you continue. Theoretically a round could go indefinitely if Money Symbols keep landing β in practice rounds end after 5-15 respins typically.
3. The Grand jackpot (1,000Γ bet) is automatically awarded when all 20 grid positions fill. This is the only mechanism that triggers the Grand. It cannot be triggered by a single Money Symbol landing as a "Grand tag" without filling the grid (though jackpot tags on individual Money Symbols still pay their tier value).
The respin chase
Players talk about Hold & Win like it's a "chase round" because the respin loop has a clear visual progression:
Respin 1 (counter at 3): Two new Money Symbols land. Counter resets to 3. Now 8 of 20 positions locked.
Respin 2 (counter at 3): One Money Symbol lands. Counter resets to 3. 9 of 20 locked.
Respin 3 (counter at 3): Zero Money Symbols land. Counter ticks to 2.
Respin 4 (counter at 2): One Money Symbol lands. Counter resets to 3. 10 of 20 locked.
Respin 5 (counter at 3): Zero. Counter ticks to 2.
Respin 6 (counter at 2): Zero. Counter ticks to 1.
Respin 7 (counter at 1): Three Money Symbols land! Counter resets to 3. 13 of 20 locked.
Respin 8 (counter at 3): Zero. Counter ticks to 2.
...and so on, until 3 consecutive zero-Money-Symbol respins exhaust the counter. The round then ends and all Money Symbol values + jackpot tags are summed.
In this example, the round produced 13 locked Money Symbols across 8+ respins β a strong but not extreme outcome. Most actual rounds end at 7-12 locked positions.
When the Grand jackpot fires
The Grand jackpot of 1,000Γ bet is awarded only when all 20 grid positions are filled with Money Symbols. This is a hard rule:
- Filling 19 of 20 positions does not award the Grand. You still get the accumulated cash values + any Mini/Minor/Major tags that landed.
- Filling all 20 = automatic Grand of 1,000Γ bet on top of any other accumulated values.
- The Grand is a fixed multiplier, not a progressive pool β same 1,000Γ for every player who fills the grid.
In our test set, full-grid fills occurred in 0 of 9 bonus rounds. Public big-win compilations show one approximately every 250-400 bonus rounds.
The jackpot tags during respins
Each Money Symbol that lands carries either a cash value (e.g., "5Γ") or a jackpot tag (Mini / Minor / Major / Grand). The distribution we observed in our test set:
| Money Symbol type | Frequency among Money Symbols landing |
|---|---|
| Cash value 1Γ bet | ~30% |
| Cash value 2Γ bet | ~22% |
| Cash value 3Γ bet | ~15% |
| Cash value 5Γ bet | ~12% |
| Cash value 10Γ bet | ~8% |
| Cash value 15Γ bet | ~5% |
| Cash value 20Γ bet | ~3% |
| Mini tag (20Γ bet) | ~3% |
| Minor tag (50Γ bet) | ~1.5% |
| Major tag (100Γ bet) | ~0.4% |
| Grand tag (forced via grid fill, no individual tag) | (only via full grid) |
Most Money Symbols carry small cash values. Jackpot tags (Mini, Minor, Major) appear in a smaller proportion of landings. The combined value of a typical Hold & Win round ends up being 15-40Γ total bet because the cash-value tags dominate.
Realistic vs dream outcomes
A clean expected-value picture of Tiger Gems Hold & Win rounds:
| Outcome shape | Probability | Typical payout |
|---|---|---|
| Dead round (few extra symbols, few cash tags) | ~15% | 0-10Γ stake |
| Standard round (steady Money Symbol landings, mostly small cash) | ~45% | 10-30Γ stake |
| Above-average round (some Minor/Major tags, decent cash tags) | ~25% | 30-80Γ stake |
| Big round (Major tag + multiple high cash values) | ~10% | 80-200Γ stake |
| Huge round (multiple Major tags + strong board) | ~4% | 200-500Γ stake |
| Near-grand round (18-19 positions filled) | ~1% | 500-1,000Γ stake |
| Grand-fill round (all 20 positions filled) | ~0.5% | 1,000-1,519Γ stake |
Plan for the standard round shape. Treat anything above 80Γ as a session win. The huge rounds are real but they're not the expected case.
The visual choreography
What makes Hold & Win visually engaging is the audio-visual build during respins. Each step has its own cue:
- Money Symbol lands during respin: crisp metallic "clink", the symbol locks with a brief gold flash.
- Respin counter resets to 3: the counter spins up with a chime.
- Counter ticks from 3β2β1: progressively lower-pitched ticks build tension.
- Last respin with counter at 1: the music intensifies, the tiger appears more aggressive in the background animation.
- Round ends: a brass-percussive payoff tune plays as values sum up.
- Grand jackpot fires: the screen explodes with golden sparks, the tiger roars, the Grand banner displays.
This is craft. The visual cues are subtle enough not to over-promise, but distinct enough that you always know exactly what state the round is in.
Bonus Buy and the Hold & Win round
When you enter Hold & Win via Bonus Buy (where available), the round behaviour is identical to a natural trigger. Same starting position (6 Money Symbols on trigger), same respin reset logic, same jackpot tag probabilities, same Grand-fill mechanism.
The only difference: you paid ~100Γ stake to skip the base-game grind.
Bonus Buy is worse value over the very long run (the variance against you is concentrated) but useful for sampling many Hold & Win rounds quickly. See Tiger Gems Max Win for the Bonus Buy vs natural trigger comparison.
Strategy myths about Hold & Win
"You can predict the next Money Symbol." No. RNG is independent.
"Bigger bets get more Money Symbols." No β same probability across all bet sizes.
"Money Symbols cluster after a dry stretch." No β gambler's fallacy. Each spin is independent.
"Auto-spinning gets fewer Hold & Win triggers." No β same RNG.
"Some casinos run lower Money Symbol rates." Casinos can deploy different RTP variants (95.57% / 93.04% / 92.00%) which alter the base-game math, but the Hold & Win trigger mechanic itself is consistent. The featured four run the 95.57% certified default.
When to walk away from the session
You can't "walk away from a Hold & Win round mid-respin" β you have to play out the respins. But you can walk away from the session after the round finishes.
Most player regret in Tiger Gems comes from continuing to spin after a big Hold & Win round, hoping for another. The math doesn't care about your last bonus. Each subsequent spin has the same trigger probability as the first. Discipline here is the difference between a winning session and a break-even session.

Quick FAQ
Is there really a Grand jackpot in every round? No β the Grand only fires when all 20 grid positions fill. In rounds where the grid doesn't fill, the Grand is not awarded (only the smaller jackpot tags that may have landed individually).
Does the respin counter ever go above 3? No β it caps at 3 even on big landings.
Can I retrigger the bonus during respins? Effectively yes β every new Money Symbol resets the counter to 3, which functions like a soft retrigger.
Does Bonus Buy affect Hold & Win math? No β same math as natural trigger.
What if the round ends with 19 positions filled? You get all accumulated cash + jackpot tag values, but no Grand bonus.
Why is the Grand tied to a full grid fill? RTP balance. Awarding 1,000Γ without the full-fill requirement would blow past 95.57%.
